From its inception in 1923, the idea for creating a national park of the Smoky Mountains area was fraught with seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Financial, cultural and political issues were overcome to create what is today the most visited national park in our American Park system.
In 1926, Lee Bright, as an agent for the state of Indiana, purchased enough land to establish a game reserve in Brown County. Since 1941, the former game reserve has been administered as a State Park-- unmanaged, protected and preserved, lasting into perpetuity for all citizens of Indiana and their guests to enjoy for recreation, nature-study, picnicking, hiking or other pursuits in the intelligent use of leisure time and Brown County State Park is today the most visited state park in Indiana.
Clingmans Dome is the highest peak in the Smokies... Hesitation Point a favorite stop in Brown County State Park. On clear days they afford visitors spectacular views of both Parks.
Sixty nine of the Appalachian Trail cross the crest of the Great Smoky Mountains, serving as a border between Tennessee and North Carolina. The AT serves as a backbone to which several major Smokies hiking trails connect. The Ten O'clock twenty mile hiking trail runs from Yellowwood State Forest to Brown County State Park.
Well maintained hiking trails crisscross both Parks. They offer great opportunities to get out of your vehicle to view wildflowers in spring, fantastic smoky vistas in winter and fall foliage in the autumn.
The 49th annual Wildflower Pilgrimage is held in April by the Great Smoky Mountains Natural History Association. The Wildflower Foray is held in April at T. C. Steele State Historic Site, Yellowwood Forest & Brown County State Park Both include guided long and short walks, talks and demonstrations to view wildflowers, gardens, birds, ferns, geology, and more.
Despite the damage horses do to trails, horseback riding is still supported in the Great Smoky Mountains and The Smoky Blue Hills 'O Brown. Both parks have drive-in horsmans camps and horses-for-hire stables.
